Melrose Abbey
Melrose Abbey

Lauder is the oldest ancient burgh in Scotland and the town of Lauder sits on the historic route between England and Edinburgh.

While you’re here, we recommend you have a look at the Lauder Church, just over the road from the Black Bull. It was built in 1673 and is designed in an unusual Greek cross plan with an octagonal tower.

Visible from some of our windows is Thirlestane Castle. A wooden structure built for Edward I in 1286 during his invasion of England, it’s been rebuilt a number of times over the years. In 1670 it was transformed from a fortified house into the grand palace it is today. Definitely worth a look.

Other places of interest in the surrounding area include:

  • Crichton Castle and Collegiate Church near Pathhead
  • Melrose, Kelso and Jedburgh Abbeys
  • Soutra Aisle
  • Roslyn Chapel at Rosslyn Glen
  • Floors Castle near Kelso
  • Mellerstain House near Earlston
  • Manderston House near Duns
We’re happy to help you plan an itinerary. We have leaflets for most local places of interest and events. Please just ask.

Have a look at just some of the local events taking place within easy reach of the Black Bull.
