January and February
The perfect time to enjoy a country
weekend, cosy up in front of an open fire at
the Black Bull and enjoy a wee dram after a brisk walk.
The countryside is a vision of soft greys and blues,
often covered in a blanket of fresh snowfall. Glasgow’s
Celtic Connections traditional
music festival in January is just an hour and half away.
March
Don’t miss the Reivers’
Festival in the Borders town
of Hawick, an exciting festival that brings to
life the 16th century borderlands of Scotland and England.
Re-enactments, music, processions and a fire show.
April
Base yourself at the Black Bull in April
and enjoy a range of festivals in nearby Edinburgh,
including the International Harp Festival,
the International Science Festival
and the eclectic Triptych music festival.
Or how about the Glasgow Art Fair?
May
The Borders comes alive with an action packed
programme of events during the Borders
Festival of the Horse (19th - 30th May) –

Races. And don’t forget the Annual
Scottish Teddy Bear Fair in Melrose and the Peebles
Jazz Festival.
June
It’s an outdoor month in June with
Gardening Scotland and the Royal
Highland Show both taking place in Edinburgh
and the Borders Vintage Automobile
Club Historic Motoring Extravaganza against the
magnificent backdrop of Mellerstain House. But most
importantly for the Borders, it’s time for the
Common Ridings Festivals –
unique celebrations of the ancient practice of marking
a town’s boundaries - taking place across the
Borders.
July
Enjoy ceilidhs and concerts at the
Newcastleton Traditional Music Festival and don’t
miss Traquair Fair in Innerleithen.
A spectacular location hosts a fantastic family event
of theatre, dance, music, crafts and complimentary medicine.
Or head into town for the Edinburgh
International Jazz and Blues Festival.
August
Festival month in Edinburgh with its world
famous International Festival,
Book Festival, Film
Festival and Festival Fringe
all taking place at the same time. And don’t forget
the Edinburgh Military Tattoo.
Closer to home, there’s Scotland’s premier
equestrian event – the Thirlestane
Castle Scottish Championship Horse Trials. You
can see the castle from some of our bedrooms!
September
The Borders Festival of
Jazz and Blues offers a weekend of top class
music and Doors Open every weekend
in September gives you the chance to see some of the
Scotland’s hidden interiors.
October

– Both Sides of the Tweed Folk
Festival - takes place in Eyemouth while the
Scottish International Storytelling
Festival hosts over sixty events for adults and
children through Edinburgh, Lothian and the Borders.
November and December
From late November enjoy one of Europe’s
finest Christmas festivals at the Edinburgh
Capital Christmas, with its magical winter wonderland
and festive cheer. Late December sees over 100 musicians
and performers take part in The Land,
The Light and The Locals in locations across
the Borders.
Last but not least, there’s Edinburgh’s
Hogmanay – the world’s
best New Year celebrations. Four fabulous days and nights
of events throughout the city. When you’ve had
enough partying, head back to the Black Bull and relax!
